IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Allison M.
Lendman
August 22, 1940 – May 2, 2025
Allison M. (Hedrick) Lendman, 84, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, at the IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington with her family at her side.
Born on August 22, 1940, to Wythe and Florence (Lauff) Hedrick, Allison grew up in Sterling, Illinois and graduated from Newman Central Catholic High School in 1958. On August 27, 1959, she married Robert J. Lendman, beginning a joyful partnership of love, family, and service. She studied at the College of St. Theresa and Northern Illinois University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Education.
Allison's passion for education and mentoring young people guided much of her life. She began her career at her alma mater, Newman Central Catholic High School, where she taught and coached for 14 years while also enthusiastically advising cheerleading and pompon squads. She later brought her energetic spirit and dedication to elementary physical education programs in the Rockford Diocese.
From 1971 to 1982, Allison's dedication to youth and unmatched organizational skills made her a vital behind-the-scenes force in the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. Whether bandaging scrapes, driving buses, or coordinating tour schedules, she became a beloved and essential part of the corps family. Her leadership and logistical skills extended to organizing the DCI Mid-America competition for multiple years, and she and her husband proudly served on the inaugural Board of Directors for Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps—continuing as dedicated fans and supporters of the activity for many years.
Allison brought her boundless energy and creativity to a wide array of volunteer efforts. She developed comprehensive exhibits for the Monroe County History Center Museum and could often be found diving into family records in its Genealogy Library—both her own and in guidance to others. She also gave her time to WFIU and WTIU Public Broadcasting, Meals On Wheels, and the Community Kitchen.
Even in Florida, Allison's spirit of service endured. She volunteered at The Attic Thrift Shop, supporting the mission of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and helped care for well-loved children's books at the Bellview Public Library. Though she had many entertaining activities of her own, Allison's favorite way to spend time was enjoying her family and pouring her heart into their interests and endeavors.
Allison is survived by her son David (Rebecca) Lendman of Spencer, IN, and daughter Joan (John) Padawan of Bloomington, IN. She leaves behind seven grandchildren—Joseph (Jean), John, Joshua, and Jacob Padawan, Gabriel, Naomi, and Nicholas Lacy—and four great-grandchildren: Jaden, Joseph, James, and Jack. She is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister Marilyn A. Hermes; and two nephews.
Proudly an Illinoisan by birth, a Floridian for fun, and a Hoosier at heart, Allison embodied a life of joy, service, and quiet leadership.
Per her wishes there will be no funeral or gatherings. Cremation and private graveside service only.
In lieu of memorials, the family encourages you to honor Allison's legacy with random acts of kindness in your own community.
