James Paul Deckard, a devoted servant to his community and a skilled craftsman whose life was marked by dedication and creativity, passed away peacefully at his home in Ellettsville in the care of his wife, and children, on May 22, 2026. Born on August 18, 1950, in Mitchell, Indiana, James embodied a spirit of unwavering commitment to his values and the people he touched throughout his lifetime.

James’s journey began in the small town of Mitchell, where he was raised by his parents, Lowell Deckard and Martha Bell (Bishop) Deckard, both of whom have since passed on. From an early age, he exhibited a deep respect for craftsmanship and an enduring passion for building. This passion blossomed into a lifelong career as a carpenter and craftsman, where he became renowned not only for his mastery of traditional woodworking techniques but also for his innovative work constructing both traditional and hybrid musical instruments. His hands crafted not just objects, but vessels of beauty and harmony that resonated with those lucky enough to experience them.

His commitment to service extended beyond his workshop. Between 1978 and 1984, James served as a home church pastor in his birthplace of Mitchell, Indiana, guiding his congregation with compassion and integrity. Later, his talents found a new home in Jerusalem, where from 1985 to 1992 he led maintenance at the Anglican School. His meticulous care ensured the school’s environment was nurturing and well-kept for generations of students.

A man of principle, James stood firm in his beliefs during a tumultuous era in American history. He registered as a conscientious objector to U.S. military action in Vietnam, standing steadfast in his conviction for peace and thoughtful reflection—a testament to his moral courage and deep sense of humanity.

James Paul Deckard is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne Deckard, who shared in his life’s journey and supported him through all seasons. His legacy is one of integrity, skill, and kindness, and he leaves behind a lasting impression on the many lives he touched—whether through his craftsmanship, his pastoral care, or his steadfast dedication to his community.

As we remember James, we honor a life well-lived, marked by dedication to his faith, his craft, and his family. His presence will be deeply missed, yet his contributions remain embedded in the hearts of those who knew him and in the lasting beauty of his work.
