Janice Elaine Darby-Freeman passed away December 9th, 2023, at Bloomington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bloomington, Indiana, after suffering a major stroke.

She was born October 5th, 1939, in Ashland, Kentucky, the daughter of William Hugh Darby and Opal Pauline Boggs Greskamp. She is survived by her daughters, Denise Elaine Freeman Riffel of Martinsville, Indiana and Janean Michelle Freeman of Pikeville, Kentucky, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, twin sisters Carolyn J. Carmichael and Angela J. Burrows-Mabis of Florida, one nephew, as well as cousins and extended family across the Northeast corner of Kentucky near Ashland.

Janice loved listening to music, watching classic movies and musical theater productions, attending live arts performances, dancing, eating at good restaurants, and, most of all, spending time with her daughters and friends. She always greatly appreciated the various charitable organizations located in Bloomington. She volunteered at Community Kitchen, raising money for the Beacon Inc. – Shalom Community Center (as well as other charities) by selling her hand-crocheted hats and scarves, and remained active at Centerstone – Bloomington.

Her family is very thankful for the support and love given to her by the staff at Centerstone, especially Melissa Kilpatrick, who was a constant source of support during many of the years she lived in Bloomington. They are also very grateful for the support of the Bloomington Housing Authority, the Community Kitchen, the Beacon Inc. – Shalom Community Center, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Salvation Army, Opportunity House, as well as the various businesses and individuals who helped Janice live independently for over 25 years. Her daughters will forever remain thankful for the staff at Bloomington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and IU Health Hospice, who took excellent care of their mother, especially during her final days.

Family and friends are invited to attend a simple graveside service that will be held at noon on January 5th, 2024, at Rose Hill Cemetery located at 1100 West 4th Street in Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, Janice's daughters ask that contributions be made in memory of their mother to Centerstone – Bloomington, the Community Kitchen, the Beacon Inc. – Shalom Community Center, and/or Bloomington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. All organizations are located in Bloomington, Indiana.
