Larry Richard Pursell, the unofficial "Mayor" of Stinesville, Indiana walked through the beautiful sunset on the evening of May 22nd, 2022 and into the arms of his loving Saviour. Born March 13, 1947 the son of James and Viola, Larry wore many hats throughout his life. No hat fits better than being the husband to his loving wife of 54 years, Susie. In retirement, Larry and Susie loved the simplicity of small-town living, sitting on the porch swing, camping, yard sales, golf cart rides (which were significantly slower than the late model stock car rides that Larry enjoyed earlier in life) and spending time with any family or friends that stopped by their home.
Larry is preceded in passing by his parents, Jim and Viola, grandparents, various aunts and uncles, his brother-in-law Wayne Padgett, and most recently, Larry was looking forward to reuniting with his beloved daughter in-law Jennifer Pursell.
He is survived by his wife, Susie; sons, Mike Pursell of Spencer and Jason (wife, Jenny) Pursell of Gosport; grandkids, Caitlyn DeWitt (husband, Billy) of Ellettsville, Ryan Pursell (fiancée, Natalie Shapker) of Stinesville, Lauryn, Lilly, and Lacey Pursell of Gosport; great-grandsons, Liam, Jax, and Brooks DeWitt; and sister, Susie Pegg of Bloomfield.
Larry was a coach, a mentor, and a hero to many who had the opportunity to grow up with Mike and Jason. He spent countless hours at baseball fields, around a basketball court, and along a football field…except for the time that he convinced the entire chain gang to quit in the middle of the game because the referees "were idiots…" he was not along the football field for the remainder of that game.
Larry was a loyal employee, a wheeler and dealer (he was often known by the locals as "Larry For Sale"), a Town Marshal, a racecar driver, a family man, and a friend that you wanted in your corner. A memorial will be held for Larry on Thursday, May 26 from 3pm-6pm at Lifeway Baptist Church in Ellettsville. A short service will follow.
While we grieve his passing and enjoy the memories that we were blessed to make with him, we also look forward to the day where we will see him again, and rejoice in the fact that we "will not have to run off."
