IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Louise Rose
Davis
April 5, 1927 – September 21, 2020
Louise Rose (Swalley) Davis, 93, of Bloomington passed away on Monday September 21, 2020, at IU Health Hospice House. Louise was born April 5, 1927 in Chicago Illinois. Later in her childhood, she resided in Ashland, Wisconsin and throughout her life she cherished an enduring love for upper Wisconsin and the Great Lakes.
Proud of her Italian immigrant father and Ojibwe mother, Louise had a passionate nature and active intellect that were ever accompanied by vigorous hand motions and a great laugh. Louise was a fabulous dancer who came of age in a fabulous time for dancing -- the 1940s Big Band era. At age 18, living in Portland, Oregon, with her sister, Anne, she met Paul Davis of Bloomington at the local USO during his service to the US Navy, and they won a number of dance competitions together. In 1946, they married in Bloomington, Indiana. They divorced in 1962. Louise was well-known to many in the Bloomington community through her years working at Cherry Hill Christian Church nursery school, and later as receptionist at the Indiana University School of Journalism, from which she retired in 1987. While her retirement afforded additional time for interests such as oil painting, cooking, and travel, the central pursuit of Louise's life was her deep, abiding faith in, and love for, Jesus Christ. She passed peacefully on to heaven where, in keeping with things that brought her great delight and joy in her earthly sojourn, we fondly hope that she was immediately greeted by a parade and provided with a tambourine.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Swalley (Americanized from Civale) and Louise Loonsfoot; her sisters, Frances Swalley, Anne Currier, and Sister Mary Carla, OSF (of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity); her former husband, Paul Edward Davis; and her son, Stephen Patrick Davis.
She is survived by her sisters, Josephine Strey and Sister Mary Lou, OSF, of Wisconsin; daughters, JoAnne (Joseph) Greene of Solsberry, Jennifer (Eric) Walker of Indianapolis, and Marcia Debnam of Bloomington; by grandchildren, Krista Davis and Alisha (Moses) Thacker of Bloomington, Courtney (Robert) McDonald of Colorado, Chelsea (Andrew) Patterson of Wisconsin, Heidi (Joe) Siler and Joshua Walker of Indianapolis; and by numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews. Donations may be sent to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 575 N Pennsylvania St, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
