Marvin D. Moody, the son of Milo and Alma Mounts Moody born in New Harmony, Indiana, on March 13, 1938, passed away at age 87 at his home in Bloomington. A lifelong scholar and educator, Marvin's journey was shaped by a deep love for learning, mentoring and gratitude toward Indiana University.

After graduating valedictorian from New Harmony High School in 1956, Marvin began college at Purdue before transferring to IU, where he earned a master's in French (1963), a doctorate in French Linguistics (1972), and later a master's in computer science (1981). He taught French at IU for over a decade chairing the First Year French Program and collaborating on several books and articles before transitioning to a 25-year career in software engineering and teaching, working in Colorado then California for Lockheed Martin and other distinguished tech companies.

Marvin returned to Bloomington in retirement, co-authoring the definitive English-Haitian Creole Bilingual Dictionary while remaining engaged with IU through volunteer work, campus events, and the creation of the Marvin D. Moody Fellowship for graduate students in French Linguistics.

He is survived by his good friend Robert Bond, sister-in-law Nancy Moody, nieces Jackie Sue Burnett (Carl), Kay Marie Cox (Rodney) and Karla Atkins (Jim), great-nieces Mackenzie and Meredith Atkins, great-nephews Carl Burnett, Colton and Jourdan Cox, Douglas and David Parker and other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ruth Martin and brother Eldon.

Reflecting on his life, Marvin once said, "All this was possible because of IU." His legacy endures through the students, colleagues, and communities he inspired.
