Nola Kortner Aiex, born Ann Nola Kortner, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022 in Bloomington, Indiana. She was 87 years old. She was born on June 23, 1934 in Baltimore, Maryland, the only child of Frank and Catherine Kortner.

She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Music from Manhattanville College in 1956. After graduating, her adventurous spirit took her to Europe and a visit to many major European cities. She studied voice at the Conservatoire de Paris from 1958-1959. Here she met her husband, Anoar Aiex, and they were married in Baltimore in December of 1959. The two of them moved to his native country of Brazil and settled in Rio Preto for a number of years in the early 60's. Upon moving back to the U.S., she obtained her Master's and Ph.D. in Portuguese at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 1972 and 1977, respectively. The early 70's again took her overseas. She, along with her husband and 2 small children, lived for 9 months during 1974 in Sesimbra, Portugal.

Nola taught at several universities – the University of Florida at Gainesville, and the University of Illinois at Urbana. She also taught ESL at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Champaign. At the time of her retirement, she was working as a document analyst for ERIC Clearinghouse at the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

She loved music and was a prodigious reader of books, magazines, and especially The New York Times, which she read everyday to the near end, pursuing both interests avidly throughout her life.

Nola was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anoar Aiex, in 2017. She is survived by her children Annabel Day (Paul) and Patrick Rigg-Aiex (Rosie) and her only grandchild, Andrew.
