Sophia Hauserman, 78, of Bloomington, died September 29, 2022. Sophia was an English scholar, landscape architect, organic farmer, nurse practitioner (at Planned Parenthood, Bloomington Jail, & a Geriatric Care facility), and senior rights advocate. She was also an inveterate correspondent.
Sophia was born in Cleveland, Ohio, graduated from Hathaway Brown School, Vassar College, University of Massachusetts School of Landscape Architecture, School of Nursing at Indiana University, and later earned Nurse Practitioner credentials.
Sophia was one of the original produce sellers at the Bloomington Farmers' Market, and during that time was a trustee of Marion Township in Patricksburg. In later years she was on the board of the Bloomington Active Aging Coalition.
During her first marriage, Sophia's beloved son Benjamin was born in 1971. Benj was killed in a tragic accident in 1995 while visiting his estranged father in Israel. The pain of this loss never left her.
Sophia was a member of a decades long Women's Group and found great support there. In 1994 Sophia met her future husband Gene Arnholt with whom she enjoyed the last 28 years of her life. Sophia maintained close relationships with her 4 siblings, Anne, Ellen, Martin and Joel and was a favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews David (deceased), Sarah, John and Elizabeth.
Interment will be at Valhalla Memorial Gardens, 11 am, Monday, October 10. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky, P.O. Box 397, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
